Production Operative - Textiles ***internal vacancy only*** [Ref. AS0000-037]
Reporting to the Section Leader, Undertaking the role of the Production Operator your duties include the carrying out of any job in the factory for which you have been trained, or are competent to perform, relating to the production of IrvinGQ related products. OVERVIEW OF ROLE

Reporting to the Section Leader, Undertaking the role of the Production Operator your duties include the carrying out of any job in the factory for which you have been trained, or are competent to perform, relating to the production of IrvinGQ related products.
Duties may also require that you train others in the skills that you are assessed as being competent to perform.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To undertake manufacturing tasks assigned by the Section Leader or Manufacturing Manager
  • Achievement of efficiency targets
  • To record relevant information to ensure lot traceability
  • Correct booking of daily timesheets.
  • Keep all working areas clean/tidy and organised
  • Ensure minimum downtime is achieved on all jobs
  • To adhere to set quality standards
  • To adhere to health and safety guidelines

INTRINSIC SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Production related experience gained within a Textiles related industry
  • Good level of manual dexterity with the ability to use industrial sewing machines to their full extent and other sewing related equipment where required to do so
  • Able to work effectively as part of a team, demonstrating strong interpersonal skills and communication skills
  • Attention to detail and ability to work to high quality standards
  • Able to work with minimal supervision

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous manufacturing experience (minimum 2 years)within a Textiles industry
  • Ability to read MPI’s (Manufacturing Process Instructions) and training guides
  • Level 2 NVQ in PMO (performing manufacturing operations)or equivalent is desirable but not essential

SPECIFIC SKILLS

Sewing Machinist

  • Previous experience in the use of industrial sewing machines; including single needle; zig-zag; bar-tack; twin needle; 4 needle; automatic; adler; over-locker.
  • Setting up of machines, threading and cleaning, understanding of stitch requirements for different threads (tensions) and ability to change a needle.
  • Previous experience gained as an industrial machinist (minimum 2 years),with an understanding of the importance of achieving quality standards and efficiency targets
  • Ability to accurately follow a Manufacturing pack
  • Assembly of component parts, both fabric and metal (buckles, D rings etc) to complete finished product.

Fabric Cutter

  • Experienced and confident working with all fabric cutting devices
  • Experienced working with templates
  • Able to safely use a variety of cutting tools and measuring devices
  • Experienced in the cutting of a variety of fabrics
  • Ability to accurately follow a Manufacturing pack

 

Line and Tape Cutter

  • Experienced and confident working with templates, jigs and tapes

Bench Hand

Basting

  • Use of a soldering iron to assemble products using jigs

  • Manipulation of light fabrics to form a bridle (interweaving by hand)
  • Using heat treatment (Heat Gun) to enclose bridle in heat shrink

Studding

  • Ability to use a stud press (foot operated), for setting washers and eyelets into textile products
  • Use a clicker press for cutting out shapes from polypropylene and foam pieces

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

  • Strict observation of safety rules and regulations in operating machinery and working within the various environments within IrvinGQ
  • Sewing machinists will be sitting down operating the sewing machine and feeding fabric through it, for long periods of time
  • Bench hands, Cutters, Basters, Riggers, Studding and Bridle Manufacture will require operator to be standing for long periods of time

Liaise with Research & Development on new products/designs to ensure they can be manufactured in production using best practice.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Programming and process development utilising various CNC Machine tools.
  • Provide expert offline programming and support using EdgeCAM to produce NC programs for 3, 4 and 5 Axis Milling Centres and Twin Spindle Lathes with Milling Capability.
  • Direct Programming and program modification using various controllers;
    o Fanuc
    o Heidenhain
    o Mazatrol
    o Siemens
    o Yasnac
    o Cincom
  • Produce accurate work instructions for the production setters as well as provide daily production support to ensure machine shop performance and output.
  • Improve current methods using modern ‘lean’ manufacturing techniques.
  • Prove out your process and produce 1st off parts for submission to inspection prior to a production run.
  • Take ownership of the full production process by creating Routings and BOMs to support the machine shop programs.
  • To create and maintain Manufacturing Process Instructions by means of instructions/sketches/photos etc. within Microsoft Word or as a scanned file, to enable repeatable manufacture of products in processes above.
  • To liaise with Research & Development on new products/designs to ensure they can be manufactured in production in the most suitable way.
  • Investigate and implement new tooling, work holding and machining strategies to generate productivity savings
  • To look at all new orders received with the view of our ability to manufacture/produce in production.

  • To oversee and control various production samples as required by customers, NPI programs or continuous improvement activity. Liaising with operators, training officer, Research & Development, Quality and customer as required.
  • To lead technology introduction through new equipment and processes
  • Identify and coordinate risks within the production process
  • To liaise with all departments to ensure sufficient information is available to cost products.
  • To look into improvements in manufacturing in production in terms of methods and tooling/machinery. Also in terms of design improvement where possible.
  • To provide support to other areas of the business in continuous improvement and cross functional projects.
  • Introduce and maintain TPM requirements within the manufacturing processes liaising with facilities when appropriate.

  • Ability to understand various manufacturing methods and techniques.
  • Excellent communication / interpersonal skills
  • Excellent working knowledge of Word and Excel, and ability to read/understand engineering drawings.

  • Reconciliations
  • Various Reporting
  • Overheads analysis
  • Variance analysis
  • R&D Project spend analysis
  • Stock analysis
  • Assisting the EW Finance Manager with forecasting Overheads & Recoveries
  • Profitability analysis on Key contracts and projects
  • Review and resolve queries in respect of EW Direct Labour transactions and liaise with Llangeinor Finance to assist with Weekly / Monthly balancing.
  • Assisting EW Finance Manager with review of Completed Production jobs, and Job Closures.
  • Goods for Dispatch – completing advice notes and maintaining Goods For Dispatch register.
  • Updating Export Control Log.
  • General administration for EW – Typing up and laminating Signs, Notices and Labels. Scanning, Ordering Stationery etc…
  • Reception duties, including greeting visitors and ensuring they are escorted around the EW facility, and sorting and distributing mail.
  • Other ad-hoc tasks to support the EW Finance Manager or EW team.

As a Technician within the Facilities function, you will embrace working as a team and possess a strong will to succeed. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Miscellaneous admin duties. Needs to be IT literate and able to submit reports when required.
  • Carry out routine Preventative maintenance inspections and maintain records of the production equipment
  • Ability to work individually and as part of a team.
  • Ability to prioritise workload. Liaise with and be the first point of contact to external contractors/suppliers to identify and overcome problems.
  • Knowledge of an array of Lathes, XYZ’s, CNC machine centres & Milling Machines along with the

  • Familiarity with the maintenance and testing of Fire systems
  • Experience of buildings maintenance and general repairs
  • A full understanding of the Health and Safety at Work Act to comply with legislation.

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Time proven Experience within a Metals Machining Production environment
  • Knowledge in CNC machines centres with the ability to maintain hardware and software

  • Must be able to obtain UK Security Clearance

  • 17th Edition Electrical
  • NEBOSH General certificate preferred

OVERVIEW OF ROLE

Reporting to the Section Leader, the role of the Production Operator is to undertake a variety of production and assembly related tasks to achieve production requirements in the Metals Division.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The finishing of products with the use of hand tools (such as pneumatic tools), files, polishing equipment and other tooling associated with hand finishing, such as drills, needle files, rasps etc.
  • The safe running of Brake Presses from 60 ton up to 360 ton, in addition to other smaller types of presses and general workshop machinery including guillotines, Carbolite oven, aqua blast and dot marking equipment
  • To work in the Heavy Fabrication and Light Assembly areas assembling a range of equipment from safety and survival, to RIB assemblies, boat platforms and other related equipment, using the technical drawings provided
  • To use specialist equipment for paint spraying, overhead cranes, rivet guns, propane or oxy acetylene equipment and other equipment generally used within a metals production area
  • To work in accordance with health and safety policies and procedures, including the use of PPE

 

Press Shop

  • Run various Power Presses from 6 ton (Fly press)up to 360 ton (coining press)
  • Set and run Pillar Drills
  • Set and run a Roto Finishing Machine
  • Fettle and polish components to attribute gauges using hand tools, linishing and polishing machines
  • Work to high Quality Standards

 

Light Assembly / Large Fabrication

  • Paint spraying, hand drilling and riveting
  • Setting and running of fly presses and spin rivet machines
  • Use of the swaging machine and pillar drills
  • Experienced in the heating of metal parts using propane or oxy acetylene equipment
  • Confident in using various hand torque wrenches and air (pneumatic)tools

Work in the large fabrication area will require operators to be physically able to:

  • Lift weights of 10kg regularly ensuring correct manual handling guidelines are observed
  • Use physical force when using hand drills sometimes for long periods
  • Work in enclosed spaces
  • Operators will also be required to operate air power rivet guns, air ratchets and be able to reach into tight spaces to fit components

 

Other Considerations:

  • Adhere to and work in accordance with safety rules and regulations when operating machinery and working within the various environments in the metals division
  • The strict use of Personal Protective equipment (PPE)at all times, including (as a minimum), appropriate steel toe capped footwear, suitable eye protection, suitable ear defenders
  • Paint spraying requires additional health and safety procedures

 

INTRINSIC SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Attention to detail

  • Ability to work as part of a team

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • GCSE Maths and English (or equivalent)
  • Level 2 NVQ in PEO (Performing Engineering Operations) or equivalent

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE/ SKILLS

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience of working in a metals production environment, assembling and fabricating a wide range of metals products (typically in the aerospace or automotive industry)
  • Ability to read and understand complex engineering drawings and instructions
  • Ability to measure with a high degree of accuracy using Verniers, CMM machine and other relevant measuring tools
  • Ability to work safely and effectively with minimum supervision

PHYSICAL CONSIDERATIONS

  • Good manual dexterity and ability to physically handle the tools described above for periods of time, in order to complete production tasks to the time specified
